Interdisciplinary Teaching and Research: A Not-So Glamorous Success Story

I grew up in Pest (and not in Buda, as my wife did; but I promised her not to make jokes anymore about the cultural differences in the two parts of the city observed that time), and was raised behind the iron curtain. Probably I realized soon that there are hidden sad family stories related to the war. Love of science and of literature came from my parents, and the "gymnasium" in the early sixties still preserved something from the spirit of the Prussian educational system, well, combined with the Russian one. (The latter went together with an excellent training in math, particularly in solving word problems, see e.g. (10).
